Sir Thomas Mansel Franklen Trust

The Sir Thomas Mansel Franklen Trust is constituted under a trust deed dated 9 March 1983 and is a registered charity number 525560. The governors of the school are Managing Trustees of the Trust.

The objects of the charity are to provide for Cowbridge Comprehensive School special benefits of any kind not normally provided by the local education authority and promoting the education, including social and physical training, of persons who are or were pupils at Cowbridge Comprehensive and who are in need of financial assistance. The charity is open to all pupils in line with its charitable objects.

Criteria for the awarding of grants

General: 1. 60% to provide benefits for the school not available from the Local Education Authority
  2. 20% to pupils/former pupils for specific projects
  3. 20% to be available for either 1 or 2 above, at the Trustees discretion.

Student requests for financial support towards living expenses at University would not qualify for a grant.

All applications from present and past pupils are considered by the TMF committee members (representing the main governing body) at their regular meetings.

Applications by any current and past pupils for grants are categorised according to the following priorities:

1. Specific projects which promote the education, including social and physical training of the applicant for example (but not limited to):

Charitable work involving expeditions, national sporting representation, field work, coaching/leadership training, courses/workshops relevant to fields of study, supporting musical education.

2. The provision of help towards the purchase of specialised equipment relevant to the field of study/interest. For example (but not limited to) :

National sporting team kit, musical instruments, fieldwork equipment etc

3. Supporting those in need of financial assistance to further/higher education.

The award of any grant is dependent upon the income available to the Trust at the time of the application. Specific costings are expected.

Any pupil or former pupil seeking financial support should write to Mr Michael Clay who chairs the TMF trust Committee stating the purposes for which grant aid is required. The committee meets very regularly and will consider applications made at any time.

Benefits of the Trust

Recently the Trust was able to give a generous contribution to ex pupil Natasha Claire to enable her to travel to Peru and give dental treatment to children who would otherwise be unable to receive it.

Please help us make a great school fantastic

We’re almost there!

Our new school is up and running, an impressive feat I am sure you will agree, which is the result of a huge amount of effort from the Staff, Parents and Pupils alike to make it work. The sums of money behind all this are equally impressive:

  • £21.5m of Vale of Glamorgan LEA funding which paid for the building work
  • £195k raised entirely from voluntary contributions from parents and others (thank you) towards the £210k necessary to buy the equipment and facilities that your children deserve.

Here is what we still need to make our great school fantastic:

  • £10k will buy equipment for a Recording Studio – including keyboards, drums, microphones and studio mixing software – great for classical and contemporary music studies
  • £5k will buy the final pieces of music equipment for our Fitness/Dance Studio and pay for a long jump pit installed for athletics – so important for children to have easy access to keep healthy!
