Sports Reports 08 February 2010
08th February 2010

Sport: Hockey
Year Group: 10

Cowbridge year 10 hockey team played Bro Morgannwg their first match of 2010. Bro Morgannwg started very strong and had most of the possession but could not get into the circle to have a shot on goal due to good defensive work by Katie Wynne and Laura Howells. When Cowbridge did get possession of the ball Welsh player Rachel Bradshaw single handily took the ball into Cowbridge’s attacking score. Bro Morgannwg’s goal keeper was excellent and saved many shots. At half time it was 0-0. In the second half Cowbridge came out strong and finally the girls showed knowledge of the game and found space down the wing for Romy Killick and Coryn Sexton to have shots on goal. Eventually after a short course Rachel Bradshaw scored to win the game 1-0. Well done.

Year Group: 10

Year 8 hockey team played St. Cyres on yet another wet and muddy pitch. Cowbridge started strong with Izzy Eddy Williams and Hannah Woodwood tackling hard through St. Cyres defence with Eliza Smith scoring the first goal.

This started the ball rolling scoring goals from Hannah Woodwood (2), as did Georgia Lott, Kate Llewellyn and Olivia Brown scoring one each and Eliza Smith scored her second goal in the final minutes making the final result 8-0. A great win for Cowbride.

Year Group: 9

On Monday January 25th, the Year 9 Hockey Team travelled to UWIC for the preliminary round of the county tournament. As two schools withdrew late in the day, it left Cowbridge, Llanishen & Plasmawr to fight it out for a qualifying place in the final.

It was a bitterly cold day, but Cowbridge were in good spirits and looking forward to playing hockey on a top quality pitch. The girl’s first game was against Llanishen, who were already warmed up after their game against Plasmawr. Lanishen caught the Cowbirdge girls off guard and scored in the first play of the game. Cowbridge defence responded well, and Mairi Boxall and Liz Whitehouse in defence, together with Miriam Bennett in midfield worked tirelessly turning over Lanishen’s ball. Llanishen scored one more goal just before half time, but failed to capitalise on their opportunities in the second half. Jess Jones at Goal Keeper made some excellent and brave saves to leave the final score 2-0 to Llanishen.

Our second game was against Plasmawr, who, after drawing with Llanishen 0-0 knew they had to score more than two goals against us to qualify. They did not waste any time and came out fighting, took all their chances and were the better team, beating Cowbridge 4-0.

Despite many tireless performances in defence by the Cowbridge girls, lack of practice on a hockey pitch due to the current building work shone through today.

We look forward to the new school with enthusiasm!

Player of the match: Mairi Boxall

Sport: Netball
Year Group: 7, 8, 9

The Cowbridge netball teams travelled to Llantwit on Wednesday 3 rd February. A combined team of year 7 and 8’s took on Llantwit’s year 8 team and got off to a solid start. Consistent defence from Imogen Miller and Rebecca Thomas ensured that Llantwit were left trailing 6-1 at half time. Amy O’Donell at WA and Megan McNamee at C fed some lovely balls into the circle to enable Kim Jerwood at GA and Emily Davies at AS to capitalise. In the second half Llantwit came back fighting, whilst the Cowbridge girls relaxed slightly. Hannah Lister-Sims at WD turned over some solid interceptions in defence to ensure Cowbridge kept their lead to win the game 8-4. Player of the match was Amy O’Donnell – WA. The year 9 match got off to a slower start against Llantwit enabling them to forge ahead by half time to lead 14-5. The girls quickly responded in the second half with outstanding defence from Bethan Sloan at GK and Caitlin Allin at WD. An excellent and gutsy team performance in the 2nd half, taking the final score to 20-14.

Player of the match Year 9: Caitlin Allin – GD.

Player of the match: Year 8: Amy O’Donnell - WA
