| Cowbridge School Goes Nationwide |

Last year’s charity walk by the school in support of Christian Aid has been used by Christian Aid in this year’s national campaign literature as an example of good practice! Mr Evans of the Ethics and Philosophy Department and a group of Year 11 girls appear in glorious “technicolor” in an article which encourages schools to think about fund raising activities for next May’s Christian Aid Week. The article mentions that we raised £1500 and that forty nine pupils, five parents, six staff and a dog took part!
This year’s charity walk will take place on Saturday May 15. We will be walking from Cowbridge to Llantwit Major using footpaths and minor roads. The Ethics and Philosophy Department which organises the annual walk is hoping to improve on last year’s total amount raised.
In the new Ethics and Philosophy GCSE course, which Year 9 pupils have embarked on this year, pupils discover how religious people express their faith. One area that the department explores with pupils is the way that religious groups express their faith by supporting charities. Pupils have to learn about one charity in particular and since the school has close links with the work of Christian Aid through its annual charity walk it seemed logical that for the foreseeable future pupils study Christian Aid on their GCSE course.
Christian Aid’s campaign literature says that: ‘We provide urgent, practical and effective assistance where need is great, tackling the effects of poverty as well as its root cause.’ At this very moment Christian Aid – along with many other agencies - is busy caring for and supporting the victims of the earthquake disaster in Haiti.
