Sports Day 2009

The PE department at Cowbridge School held their annual sports day at Jenner Park on July 3rd. There were some blazing performances matching the glorious sunshine on the day. Teams are selected from the four houses (Nash (Green), Thaw (Blue), Dunraven (Yellow), and Tusker (Red), each pupil is allocated a house when they start the school . The team result was a very close affair with the Dunraven team in 4th place with 1542 points, 3rd Nash 1552, 2nd Tusker 1764.2 and in first place was Thaw with 1800 points.

In their first sports day at Cowbridge, over 70 year 7 pupils missed the event due to the Normandy trip, however there was still some outstanding performances. AnnabelCurle was the winner of three events, the 70m hurdles, the 800m and high jump. Annabel jumped 1m38 beating her previous best performance by 3cm. Nieve Gallagher won the javelin and after a fast sprint finish won the 1500m from Olivia Brown.

Harri Dowell Bennett showed he is multi talented winning the discus by over 2m, the 100m and 200m. Josh Thomas also performed well winning the long jump and the 800m by 14secs. The year 8 girls 800m was an entertaining race with six girls bunched together with 100m to go; Emily Bonney came out on top winning the sprint finish!

Harri Thomas won three events; the long jump, 75m hurdles and the 100m. The 100m saw Harri beat off Scott Lathem by 0.1 secs. In the year 9 category Fiona Bray achieved the double in the 800m and 1500m, running to two easy victories.

Molly Frost won the high jump with a jump of 1m40 the best she has jumped this year. Harri Hitchcock was a triple winner winning the high jump, 100m and 80m hurdles.

Gus McPherson had an easy victory in the shot putt winning with a distance of 12m34 over 4m better than second place. Molly Llewellyn won the 1500m, hurdles and high jump in the year 10 girls competition. The year 10 boys sprint races provided some excitement with Sam Street taking the 100m title by 0.1 secs and it was a close 200m race with Jack Laidlaw taking first place.

Elliott Mears had a runaway victory in the 800m. Ashley Pook in year 12 showed her dedication to her team by competing in four events on the day and Alice Thomas competed in three events and won all three; 80m hurdles, 100m and 800m. The year 12 boys entertained the crowds with many of the boys taking part in a majority of events. Stefan Kitchen took part in 6 events and Tom Harrison in 5. A special mention for Fred White who won the shot putt, 100m and 400m. The high jump also provided an entertaining competition with Michael Lloyd winning with a jump of 1m80.
